Official Press Release for 2018 Tour de Timor

Stage One of the 2018 Tour de Timor has set the pace for the race to come. Celebrating the 10thanniversary of Timor-Leste’s flagship sporting and tourism event the 2018 Tour de Timor set off at 0700 am from the Palacio Governo in Dili. In attendance to see the riders off was Secretary of State for Youth and Sport Nelio Isaac Sarmento who wished the riders all the best luck from the start line.
David Vaz of Portugal (3hrs 37mins) lead a solo breakaway early on establishing a twenty minute lead over second placed Peter Arnott of Australia. Behind them in third place by a further seven minutes was Cameron Judd also of Australia. First placed Timorese men’s rider, Jacinto da Costa (4hrs 10 mins) had a very strong ride finishing fourth overall.
In the women’s category Gina Ricardo of Australia (4hrs 30 mins) took out the pink jersey with two Timorese women, Maria Lua Marcal Soares (5hrs 23 mins) and Domingas Guterres (5 hrs 36 mins) almost an hour behind.
In total 115 riders set out from Dili in this, the tenth edition of Asia’s most notorious mountain bike stage race. Stage two sees all the action continue as the riders head out on a short yet incredibly challenging course that will see riders cross rivers and attack several steep ascents.
