Official press release dated 17th of May
For Immediate Release
#TdTforShe was officially launched by the patron of the Tour de Timor, José Ramos-Horta today. Through this key message Asia’s most famed MTB (Mountain bike) race aims to raise awareness for female empowerment, gender equality, education for all, women’s health and ending violence against women.
This program will be endorsed initially by key brand ambassadors from a wide varieties of backgrounds including former Tour de Timor Open Women’s Champions. These ambassadors will spread the key message #TdtforShe, which will highlight the importance of strong women role models via social media. By providing a platform for girls and women from around the world to stand up, speak out and connect – it is hoped that the Tour de Timor will prove that it is much more than just a bike race.
José Ramos-Horta said ” Over the many years we have creatively used sports, music, culture, community dialogue and support of small scale projects for the poor as additional vehicles to enhance peace and promote a culture non-violence in Timor-Leste. Tour De Timor is one such notable initiative. In 2011 our slogan was “Dame Hahu Husi Hau” (Peace begins with me), in 2012 “Dame La Iha Fronteiras” (Peace has no borders). In 2017 our key theme is Timor-Leste – ASEAN Peace Bridge: the main purpose of this is to reach out to our neighbours to participate. This year #TdTforShe aims to raise awareness for the best and most vulnerable of humanity: our daughters, sisters, aunts, mothers and grandmothers. In Timor-Leste today domestic violence as well as difficulties in accessing eduction and health services are among some of our major challenges“.
The patron of the 2017 Tour de Timor went onto to say “I hope that this social campaign gathers momentum as we approach our momentous cycling race in September – if you are a girl and you have a story to tell the world, whether it is sad or happy, I encourage you to do so, together with our message so that together we can demonstrate the power that we all have, in order to make a difference in changing the lives of half of our entire planet”.The 2017 Tour de Timor will be held over 5 days between the 19th and the 23rd of September. The course will feature over 500 kms and 11,000 meters cumulative vertical climbing making it one of the most challenging MTB races in the world.
