The NCCTRC (National Critical Care & Trauma Response Centre) will once again support the annual Tour de Timor, Timor-Leste’s flagship international adventure tourism event. Funded by the Australian Government’s Department of Health and based in Darwin, Australia’s NCCTRC will exercise to deploy field equipment and personnel to provide medical and first aid support to Asia’s most notorious MTB (mountain bike) race. Since the inception of this internationally acclaimed event, the NCCTRC has provided a range of clinical support ensuring the ongoing safety of participants and crew, while using the experience as an invaluable AUSMAT exercise opportunity.
Secretary of State for Youth and Sport, Nelio Isaac Sarmento confirmed the news by saying “The NCCTRC have received an official request from the Government of Timor-Leste to continue the outstanding support provided to the Tour de Timor. This is one of the longest standing partnerships of the event, which will celebrate its tenth anniversary this year. Over the coming weeks NCCTRC will establish and prepare their engagement, which will see Timorese doctor and emergency responders embed with the official medical team. Together this team will be responsible for making sure that all of our participants are given access to world class race medical support, enabling the riders to perform to the best and safest level possible.”
Speaking from Darwin, Professor Len Notaras AM Executive Director of the NCCTRC was able to confirm the team’s participation in the event this year. He went on to say that “the event will see NCCTRC deploy a highly trained team from across Australia to provide race medical support, continuing to foster longstanding relationships with Timor-Leste’s Ministry of Health and emergency responders in support of this internationally acclaimed event”.
Around 150 riders are expected to ride together through the central mountain region of Timor-Leste. The race will be held between 4th and 8th of September. In addition the ‘Ride for Peace’ (a short distance non competitive ride involving school children and participants) will be held on Sunday 2nd of September in the capital of Dili.Visit the official website: www.tourdetimor.com for more info.
